Parent Information Meeting Summary

On Tuesday, May 20 we held a parent information meeting for Sycamore Creek as well as the first general PTA meeting. Here is a brief summary of what was discussed at that meeting.

  • Principal Kristen Faircloth opened the meeting and welcomed everyone to Sycamore Creek Elementary School.
  • Hired teachers and staff members who were in attendance were introduced.
  • Members of WCPSS's facilities department were on-hand to provide an update on construction.
    • Building will not be completed by the first day of school. Sycamore Creek will open at Hilburn Drive Elementary School.
    • Anticipated start date for students in new building is August 18.
    • Building is proceeding for an on-target completion date during the first week of August.
    • A sidewalk will run the length of the property.
    • Improvements to Leesville Road will begin soon to provide better access to the site
    • There will be a field and walking track.
  • Building capacity and track configurations were discussed.
    • Sycamore Creek has the capacity to enroll 1,078 students.
    • The school was designed to have two classes on each grade level per track at all grade levels.
    • Our projected enrollment for the 2008-2009 school year is 755 students.
  • School hours and bell schedule
    • The instructional day is from 8:30a.m. to 3:00p.m.
    • Arrival time is between 8:00a.m. and 8:30a.m.
    • Dismissal is at 3:00p.m.
  • Kindergarten orientation and staggered entry
    • Kindergarten orientation for all tracks will be held Tuesday, May 27 at Hilburn Drive Elementary.
    • Tracks 1, 2, & 3
      • July 7 - 10: Staggered entry
      • July 11: Class lists will be created and Meet-the-Teacher night
      • July 14: First day of school for all kindergarten students.
    • Track 4
      • July 28 - 31: Staggered entry
      • August 1: Class lists will be created and Meet-the-Teacher night
      • August 4: First day of school for all kindergarten students.

      • Thursday, July 3, 5:00p.m. - 7:00p.m.

  • General PTA Meeting
    • PTA President Ginger Mann discussed the start-up of the PTA for Sycamore Creek.
    • By-laws were approved.
    • Yearly membership fee will be $10 per person or $15 for two people.

  • Before and After School care
    • The YMCA will be providing before and after school care on-site.

  • School Supply Lists will be posted on the website in early June.
  • School mascot and colors.
    • The winners of the voting for Sycamore's mascott and colors were announced.
    • Mascot: Corcodiles
    • Colors: Blue, White, and Green

    Members of WCPSS's transportation department were on-hand to provide transportation details.

    • Bus routes will be finalized by the middle of June.
    • If there is a safe route for students to walk to school, transportation will not be provided.
      • This determination will also be made by the middle of June.
    • Transportation will be provided for all students to Hilburn Drive Elementary while Sycamore is housed on their campus.
